The Illiana Lancers drum and bugle corps was originally organized in 1963 as the Illiana Sons of American Legion (AL) Post 220, an independent parade and exhibition corps, located on the Southeast side of Chicago, between the Calumet River and the Indiana State line.
The original Lancers started with 16 members from the Illiana Sons of American Legion Post 220 and by 1965, membership was opened to all in the local area, now known as the Illiana Lancers. The corps performed in many parades and exhibitions from 1965 to 1973. Charles Johnson was the corps director when they entered the field of competition in 1974, participating in the VFW Illinois State preliminaries in their inaugural season, placing 12th.
Over the next two years, they continued to evolve as members of the Illinois Association circuit and in 1977, they competed in their first regional championship, the Mid-American circuit, finishing in 6th position in the finals. In 1978, the corps participated in the first annual Drum Corps Midwest circuit championships and was a perennial participant. From 1978 to 1984, the Illiana Lancers competed in the “Open Class” division prelims, placing 11th in 1983, 14th in 1984, 17th in 1979 & 1982, 18th in 1978 and 21st in 1980 & 1981. The corps placed 2nd in the 1985 “A/60 Class”.
They also participated in several National & regional championships including the 1974 VFW State contest, finishing 12th in the prelims, AL state conventions, the 1977 Mid-American circuit finals, placing 6th, the 1979 Illinois State Fair, finishing in 4th position, the VFW Nationals, 16th in the 1980 preliminarily round & 5th in the last championships, finishing 4th in 1984, the 1984 DCI Midwest regionals, placing 11th in the “Class A” division and the 1985 DCI “Class A/60”, finishing in 7th place, two positions out of a finalist spot.
Although attempts were made to field a corps in 1986, the Illiana Lancers disbanded by the end of that year.
