The Horizon drum and bugle corps was originally formed as the Elmsford Raiderettes color guard in 1967 and in 1969 reorganized as the Horizon drum & bugle corps of Westchester, under the leadership of Robert “Bob” Coccaro.
The corps performed as a parade unit until 1970 and began its’ competitive status as a member of the Garden State Circuit (GSC) in 1971, placing 15th in the GSC championships. The following season, the Horizon moved to Hawthorne, with the Hawthorne Fire Department as a sponsor and finished in 12th position in the 1972 GSC contest & 10th in 1973. They also participated in the World Open “Class B” preliminary round, placing 20th. In 1974, the corps moved once again to Valhalla with the Valhalla Fire Department as a sponsor and improve to an 18th place finish in the World Open “Class B” prelims.
Hall of Famer Chris Maher marched two seasons as a member of the corps’ percussion section. Since its conception, the Horizon had exposed itself to thousands of spectators throughout the county as well as in other states. The corps competed in contests in New York, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts.
They disbanded in April of 1975, and the color guard remained active until 1976.
