The Golden Eagles drum and bugle corps was organized in the fall of 1955 under the sponsorship of the William McGlue Post 144 of L’Anse, under the direction of George Sands.
In their inaugural season, the Golden Eagles, sporting their red and gold uniforms restyled in 1960 by revising the gaucho blouses and new trousers along with new plumes for the shakos, performed in parades and exhibitions, entering the field of competition in 1957. The next two seasons saw the corps participate in the American Legion Nationals, where they placed 26th in 1958 and 18th in 1959 in the preliminary round. They also placed 2nd in the 1959 Michigan State Legion convention.
The L’Anse unit continue their string of 2nd place finishes in the Legion state contest and missed out making the finals by 5 tenths of a point in the 1961 American Legion Nationals, placing 11th in the prelims. The following year, the corps was crowned the 1962 Michigan Legion state champions for the first and only time and placed 22nd in the preliminary round of the VFW Nationals that same year. After finishing in a familiar 2nd position in the 1963 state contest, the corps reverted to parade status the following season and went inactive over the next two years.
The Golden Eagles resumed limited competitive activity in 1967 before once again going inactive and returned to the field from 1969 to 1971, closing out their last season as a parade corps in 1972.
They disbanded in 1973.
