The Guardsmen drum and bugle corps was originally formed in 1960 as the Redwood City Police Youth Club drum, bell & majorette corps, under the leadership of officer Herbert H. Weiss and sponsored by the Redwood Police Youth division & the Redwood City American Legion Post 105.
In 1967, the corps, renamed the Guardsmen, converted to a drum and bugle unit and remained active over the next two years in parade competitions and exhibitions before entering the field of competition in 1969, where they won the Northern California circuit “Class B” title. The following season proved to be very successful, the group winning both the California Open & Legion state “Class B” championships, as the mayor proclaimed the corps Redwood City’s “Goodwill Ambassadors”. In their final season, the corps competed in the Northern California circuit “Class A” division.
They disbanded in 1972.
