The Golden Shields drum and bugle corps was formed in October of 1970 and sponsored as an inner city program in part by the New Orleans Police Department, under the leadership of Louis Jeffries of which he was a police officer.
The corps, named in keeping with the police theme, entered the field of competition in 1971, sporting their navy blue & gold uniforms and participated in the VFW Nationals, where they placed 35th in the preliminary round. The unit also performed in the infamous Mardi Gras parade.
They disbanded in 1972 upon the untimely death of Louis Jeffries.
