The Assumption drum & bugle corps was originally formed February 21st, 1904, as a drum band by Father Bonneville and entertained for over 65 years.
They were widely known across the New England state and performed in a variety of events that included minstrels, lawn parties and even sponsorship of wrestling matches. The corps took on many forms in its history such as fife and drum corps, combination of fife and bugle corps and of course, drum and bugle corps.
The first transition to the drum and bugle corps activity took place in 1930, when a group of the Assumption corps went under the name of the William F Davitt VFW Post 625, attending many state and National conventions. In 1938, the corps won the MA VFW state championships and competed the following season at the 1939 VFW Nationals “Open Class” division held in Boston. They also repeated as state champions that year.
Post World War II saw the corps reorganize as the Assumption drum corps, focused on parades, exhibitions and several fife and drum competitions before returning to drum and bugle corps status in 1961. In 1962, the corps competed at the MA American Legion championships, placing 3rd and continued to progress the following season as members of the Northeastern circuit. By 1964, Assumption was also a member of several circuits including the All American, the International Association and the Yankee circuit.
The following season was the first time the corps competed at the 1965 Northeastern championships, placing 9th in the prelims, 8th in 1966 and 7th in 1967. Over the course of their history, the Chicopee color guard was also a very successful unit among the corps’ history.
Assumption struggled the next two seasons to remain active but by 1970, they went inactive and after several attempts to reactivate, they disbanded.
