The Colonial Cavaliers drum and bugle corps traced its roots back to 1929 as the Port Ewen fife and drum corps.
Over the years, the corps entertained fans locally, regionally and out-of-state, later participating in fife and drum competitions. In 1953, the transition from the fife corps to a drum and bugle corps was initiated by the new “Colonial Cavaliers” and competed by 1955. They entered the field of competition in 1957 as members of the Interstate circuit, placing 5th in the championship contest that year.
They continued to improve their competitive skills on the field as members of the 1958 Northeastern circuit and by 1959, were members of both the Northeastern and Yankee circuits, placing 6th and 5th respectively in the finals of both championships. In their final season, the Colonial unit improved to a 4th place finish in the 1960 Northeastern circuit, adding a 6th place finish in the New York state convention, placing in 6th position.
In 1961, the corps merged with the Ambassadors of Newburgh to form the Criterions.
