The Bux-Mont Raiders drum and bugle corps was originally formed in the fall of 1972 when the Skylarks of Hellertown decided to move the corps to Souderton. By the spring of 1973, the parents group decided that the money and interest wasn’t there and departed back to Hellertown.
In the interim, the parents group of Souderton disagreed and bought out the Hellertown group and the corps director remained on board in their inaugural season which saw them participate in modest field competition as members of the Eastern States Circuit (ESC) in 1973.
In 1974, the corps director resigned as Dennis Gruver and Ed Camburn took over the organization. Virginia Gerhart, Pat Schaeffer and Alice Camburn, Charlie Orner and Al Grubb were instrumental in building a foundation that included sponsorship from the Warren Royer American Legion Post No. 234 of Souderton. The Raiders began their ascent in field competition with appearances at the 1974 World Open “Class B” championships, placing 22nd in the preliminaries and finished in 9th position at the ESC contest.
The following year, they took part in the DCI “Class A” preliminaries held in Philadelphia, placing 16th , as well as return trips to the World Open “Class B” show , placing 14th and the 6th place finish at the ESC championships. In their final season of competition, they continued participation at the ESC championships with a 9th place finish and remained active throughout the 1977 season as a parade and exhibition corps.
