The Chancellors drum and bugle corps was formed in January of 1972 as a result of a merger between the Countyliners of Jackson and the Surfmen of Brick. They were sponsored by Lakewood Elks Lodge 1432, Howell Township VFW Post 9691, St. Mary’s of the Lake church in Lakewood and the Ocean County American Legion (AL) council.
In their inaugural season, the corps participated at the 1972 NJ AL state parade competition, placing 8th. They entered the field of competition as members of the 1973 Pathfinder circuit, returning to parade status the following year. In 1975, the corps joined the Eastern States Circuit (ESC), placing 6th in the finals and reverted back to a street parade corps in 1976.
Over the next two seasons, the Chancellors competed at the 1977 ESC championships, placing 11th in the finals and in 1978, expanded their competitive presence with appearances at the World Open “Class B” prelims, placing 25th, the Garden State Circuit, finishing 9th, the NJ AL state convention, where they placed in 12th position and finally a return to the ESC championships, finishing 11th in the preliminaries.
They remained active as a parade and exhibition corps before disbanding in 1980.
