The Dumont Police Cadets drum and bugle corps was originally formed in 1951 as the Ravens in Bergenfield and was under the leadership of George and Dorothy Gow. The group performed as the football team’s band and was responsible for the nickname of the team’s mascot, the “Mighty Mite”.
The corps was active over the first three seasons as a parade and exhibition unit, entering the field of competition in 1955 and after losing their support from Bergenfield, they were adopted by the Dumont Police Association, relocated to Dumont and renamed the Dumont Police Cadets in 1956. That year, the corps placed 5th in the Greater Metropolitain Association circuit and participated in their one and only National championship, finishing 26th in the preliminary round of the 1957 American Legion (AL) Nationals. In 1958, the corps continued its progression as members of the Greater New York (GNY) circuit, competing in the 1959 NJ AL convention, where they placed 7th.
The following season saw the Cadets reorganize with new Legion sponsorship from the Ridgefield AL Post 40, sporting new military-style uniforms of red and black, placing 5th in the 1960 GNY circuit championships and 4th in the Eastern States circuit contest. It was also the first of involvement in the activity for Hall of Famer Carl Ruocco as a member of the group. Over the next three years, the Dumont unit improved from 4th in the 1962 GNY to 2nd the following season, missing out by less than 4 tenths of a point to finally capturing the 1963 GNY circuit title.
After a brief appearance in field competition, the corps went inactive on July 4th, 1964, and disbanded in 1965 and several members went to the Fairlawn Police Cadets.
