The Canadaires drum and bugle corps was formed in 1963 by Ron Gibson and Tony Cardas in St. Catharines.
In their first two seasons, they competed as a parade unit throughout southern Ontario and New York state, winning several prizes including the 1964 Canadian Nationals “Junior Novice Standstill” title. That year, the corps selected its mascot “Oopik”, a three foot good luck charm.
In 1965, the corps, under the direction of Douglas Filer, moved to Niagara Falls where it was felt a better program of recruiting could be carried out. Ultimately, the Canadaires, in their white and gold uniforms, succeeded in moving up to “Class B” competition and finished in 6th position at the 1965 Canadian Nationals. The following year saw the corps return to standstill competition, tying for the 1966 Ontario provincial championships’ title and placed 3rd at the Canadian Nationals “Junior Standstill Class B” contest.
They disbanded in 1967 due to a lack of financial support.
