The Chessmen drum and bugle corps was formed in December of 1957 and was sponsored by the Charles Krebs and Camp Shanks American Legion Memorial Post 1232 of Orangeburg, under the direction of James McGloin.
The first two seasons saw the corps perform in parades and exhibitions, entering the field of competition in 1960 as members of the Interstate circuit championships, placing 8th and returning the following year, where they placed 7th in the 1961 Interstate circuit contest.
They disbanded in 1962.
