The Barons drum and bugle corps was originally formed in February of 1958 as the “Black Barons” under the direction of Jack Shoulder. They were a member of the Eastern Massachusetts circuit. In their inaugural season, the corps participated in several local parades and were ready for competition the following year.
Unfortunately, in 1959, because the “waiting list” to join the Eastern MA circuit was very long, the corps performed in parades and exhibitions. In 1960, they competed in the Eastern MA “Class B” circuit but didn’t qualify for the finals. However, they did manage a 4th place finish at the 1961 Eastern MA championship finals.
Although the corps didn’t qualify for the 1962 finals, they were gracious hosts for the Eastern MA championships. For the 1963 season, there was a name change to the “Barons of Malden” as the corps continued to compete and host Eastern MA competitions over the next 3 years.
They disbanded in 1966.
