The Flamingo Lancers drum and bugle corps was formed on March 21st, 1965, through a merger between the Optimist Flamingos of Salem & the Royal Lancers of Portland and was sponsored by the Salem Optimist Club & the 58th Division American Legion (AL) Post of Portland.
The purpose of the 1965 merger was to create a larger corps to participate in the AL National championships held in Portland. The corps, under the direction of Courtney Jones & Bruce Plumb, performed for one season, placing 2nd in the 1965 Oregon AL state convention and the AL Nationals, finishing in 13th position in the preliminary round. Their instructional staff included Ron Terry on brass, Bruce Plumb on visual and Raymond Carl on guard.
After the competition season, both corps reorganized separately.
