Charles R. Rowan AL Post 228 drum and bugle corps of Altoona was formed in the spring of 1926 as a civic unit and made their first appearance in the Altoona Memorial Day parade.

In their natty blue and white uniforms, trimmed in gold braid and wearing polished metal helmets, the corps competed in the 1927 PA state convention parade, placing 3rd, participating once again in 1929. The corps entered the field of competition in the 1930 state contest and planned on competing the following year, however, the Post’s 40 and 8 box car caught fire during the parade, destroying the car and the corps’ equipment.

The Altoona group reorganized in the summer of 1932 as a parade and exhibition group, re-entering as a field competitor in 1933 and participating one last time in the 1934 state convention contest.

In the fall of 1934, the Rowan Post 228 formed a “Sons of AL Post” drum corps as the “Senior” unit remained active from 1935 to 1940. Upon their return from World War II, the former sons reorganized in the fall of 1946, performing in the November Armistice parade.

They disbanded in 1947.
