The Blackhawk drum and bugle corps was originally
formed in the fall of 1960 as the Roy L. Vingers Sons of American Legion Post
52 under the sponsorship of the AL Post 52 of La Crosse.

Over the first two years, the corps performed in
parades and exhibitions and in the fall of 1962, they expanded by going coed
and added an all-girl color guard that was open to anyone in the La Crosse
area. Their new name would be the Blackhawk and they sported bright red and
black uniforms. The corps entered the competition field at the 1965 WI AL state
championships and returned the following season, placing 8th.

In 1967, the Blackhawk reorganized under a new
executive director, Gary Graff, a former member of the 8th Infantry division
band, to once again expand their program to the surrounding areas of La Crosse.
The Blackhawk sponsored an annual drum corps competition, Fantasy of Drums,
which was inherited by the corps when the Commanders senior unit disbanded.
They also aided the Blue Star color guard in its infancy, which would
eventually transform into a “World Class” drum corps organization.

The corps rebuilt the organization over the next two
seasons and returned to the field of competition in 1969 before disbanding in
1970.
