In 1966, the 77th Skylarks drum and bugle corps was formed as a junior unit as the St. John’s Skylarks. Their uniform consisted of a satin shirt, black pants, a red satin cummerbund and a buccaneer style hat with red trim. The following season, 77th entered the field of competition in the 1967 Yankee circuit, placing 5th in the finals of the "Class A-1", returning in 1968.
The organization merged with the Holy Rosary Caballeros in 1969 to form the Rhode Island Matadors “Senior” corps.
