The Bonnie Sloan American Legion (AL) Post 28 drum and bugle corps of New Albany was organized in the fall of 1929, sporting a West Point style uniforms with bright blue coats, white pants with red vertical side stripes, gold-braised vests of red, white Sam Brown belts and plumed hats.
The group was a very successful organization from the beginning when they finished 2nd at the 1930 IN AL state championships and were crowned the 1931 state title along with a first participation at the AL Nationals in Detroit, placing in 26th in preliminaries. Over the next three seasons, the corps won their second state title in 1933 along with two 2nd place finishes. After a 2nd place finish at the 1935 state convention, the corps returned to the AL Nationals one last time in St. Louis as a finalist, placing 11th.
In 1936, the Bonnie Sloan Post won their third state title, playing in the state convention parade the following year. The next two years saw the corps place 2nd in state contest before going inactive for several years. In 1947, they reorganized and competed at the IN AL state championships, placing 4th and took part in the 1949 state convention parade. The New Albany Legion returned to state competition in 1950 before going inactive a second time, reactivating in 1955 and competed in state competition over their last three seasons.
They disbanded in 1959.
