The Bernard Hurst American Legion (AL) Post 77 drum and bugle corps was organized in September of 1931. The instruments were purchased through F.L. Hornung, a local music dealer.
The corps performed at the 1932 AL state parade in their inaugural season and remained active the following season. In 1934, the Post 77 entered the field of competition, placing 3rd at the IN AL “Class B” state convention and finished 5th in 1936. They also participated in the 1936 AL Nationals held in St. Louis, placing 35th in the preliminaries. In 1937, the corps returned to the state championships, finishing 6th in the “Class A” finals.
Unable to form a corps in 1938, they went inactive but returned to action the next two seasons, marching in the 1939 IN AL state parade and participating in local events in 1940. The corps went inactive in 1941 and attempted to reorganize in 1946, but due to a lack of buglers, reorganized as a drum and bugle corps in local appearances in 1949. They went on to compete in the state Legion championships for the next two years. From 1951 to 1952, the Bernard Hurst Post remained active within the community.
They disbanded in 1954.
