The Dahlberg-Makris American Legion (AL) Post 7 drum and bugle corps was formed in February of 1929 as the Abner Dahlberg AL Post 7 of Rhinelander.
The corps made its first public appearance in the 1929 Memorial Day parade in uniforms consisting of white shirts, black ties and white duck pants. The next season, the Dahlberg unit performed in several local events, sporting their new Cadet style coats, black trimmed in white with red shoulder cords, West Point style shakos with red aigrettes and white and white Sam Browne belts. The first field competition was held in 1931, where they placed 5th in the “Class A” division.
No state championships were held in 1932 due to rain, but they did participate in the Legion parade and finished in 2nd position in the 1933 state “Class A” contest. Later that year, the group attended the AL Nationals’ preliminary round and parade, placing 4th in the 1934 “Class A” state convention. Over the next 4 years, the Legion Post 7 was crowned the 1935 & 1936 state “Class B” champions followed by the 1937 & 1938 state “Class A” titles. They closed the first part of their competitive history with a 2nd place finish in the 1939 WI AL state championships and a 29th position finish in the prelims of the AL Nationals. Due to a lack of interest, the corps went inactive in 1940.
In March of 1946, the Legion Post reorganized as the Dahlberg-Makris AL Post 7 and participated in the state parade, returning to field competition the next two years, placing 2nd in 1947 and 3rd in 1948 in the “Class A” convention. The corps went inactive the following year, before returning one last season in state field competition, placing 3rd in the 1950 state “Class A” contest. After yet another year of inactivity, they would perform in local parades for the last time in 1952.
They disbanded in 1953.
