The Bayway American Legion (AL) Post 260 of Elizabeth was a competitive unit from at least 1930, as they participated at several local and regional events. In 1936, the corps finished 4th at the NJ AL state “Class A” championships, participating at their first AL Nationals in New York where they placed 27th in the preliminaries. The next two seasons saw the corps finish 4th (1938) and 2nd (1939) at the state contests before returning to the 1940 AL Nationals in Boston, placing 21st in the prelims.
After the war years, Bayway once again reorganized and returned to field competition at the 1946 NJ AL state championships, finishing in 5th position. The following year, after a 7th place finish at the state contest, they competed at the 1947 AL Nationals, once again held in New York, placing 8th in the finals. In 1948, the corps returned to the NJ state contest, finishing once again in 7th place.
The corps went inactive over the next several years but did represent Our Lady of Grace Lancers of Hoboken as their Legion sponsor, who earned a 2nd place finish at the 1953 NJ state convention. In the fall of 1956, Our Lady of Grace church decided to sponsor a junior corps, leaving the senior corps without any support. Aa a result, they merged with the Bayway AL Post to form the Bayway Grays.
