The Capitalaires “Senior” drum & bugle corps traced their foundation back to January of 1931, when the George W. Manhart American Legion Post 391 of Sacramento organized their first drum corps, under the leadership of Percy B. Grant as corps director and Ray Thomas as corps manager.

They were one of the very first corps established in California and generally competed on the field once a year at the California State Legion championships, starting from their inaugural season in 1931. Upon returning from World War II, the veterans from Post 391 reorganized in 1946 and were led by the renowned Anthony “Tony” Silva in 1950.

Throughout the decade, the corps continued participating in events and competitions, adopting a new name in 1960, the “Capitalaires”, representing the state capital of Sacramento.

Due to personnel issues, the corps disbanded in 1963, reorganizing as an “All-Girls” junior corps.
