The Cornets drum and bugle corps was originally formed in the fall of 1945, shortly after World War II, as the Ottawa American Legion Post 33 drum corps.
Over the first few years, the corps was a parade and exhibition unit and in 1949, became the Cornets. DCI Hall of Famer Ken Kobold, who was also renowned for his extensive drum corps record collection, was a member of the group. In 1950, sporting new uniforms which consisted of red jackets, grey serge pants with white stripes, short shako hats with gold and red trim and white buckskin shoes, they performed in the Illinois state convention parade, finishing in 15th position. The following season saw the corps compete in the 1951 IL Legion state championships, placing 5th in the finals and remained active both locally and regionally over the next two years.
They disbanded in 1954 as the Ottawa Post 33 reallocated their support to a newly formed organization, the Marquette Crusaders junior drum corps.
