The Colonels drum and bugle corps was organized in 1964 and were sponsored by the Franklin Park American (AL) Legion Post 974.
The corps was active regionally as a parade and exhibition group until 1967, when they entered the field of competition. In 1968, the Colonels joined the Mid-America circuit and placed 9th the following year at the 1969 championships.
In 1970, the unit participated at the IL state convention, finishing 11th in the prelims and 8th in the finals at the IL State Fair. They returned to the 1971 IL AL contest, where they finished 13th in the prelims and then remained active, traveling extensively for the next 4 years within the region in community and out-of-state events.
The Colonels returned to the field in 1976, competing in the Mid-America circuit preliminaries and continued within the circuit the following year.
They disbanded in 1978.
