The Flying Dutchmen drum and bugle corps was founded January 31st, 1967, as a Centennial project of the Flying Dutchmen Alumni, under the direction of John Robbins.
In their inaugural season, the Dutchmen won the 1967 Canadian & Provincial “Junior Novice” class and followed up the next the next year with a 2nd place finish in the 1968 Canadian National “Standstill” championships. In 1969, the corps, sporting their satin green shirts with red & white sashes and black police caps, competed in the Canadian & Provincial “Junior B” class, placing 7th in both and that summer the Dutch Boy Cadets were formed to serve as a feeder corps to the Dutchmen.
Early in 1970, the Board of Directors was very fortunate in securing the Kitchener Lions Club as a partial sponsor of the corps. Later in the year the Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans Association Unit 147 of Kitchener was secured as a patron. Both clubs helped the corps very much financially each year, as well as the annual grants from the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo.
From 1970 to 1976, Flying Dutchmen competed annually in the Canadian Nationals “Class B” division, finishing in 4th position in 1971 & 1972, 2nd position in 1973, 1974 and 1976, winning the 1975 “Class B” title. The corps also participated in the annual Western Ontario circuit championships, placing 3rd in 1971 and 1972, 2nd in 1973 and was awarded first place in 1974. The Dutchmen performed in the annual Ontario provincial championships and was crowned the “Class B” champions in 1974 and 1975.
In regional competition, the corps participated in the US Open “Class A” preliminaries from 1972 to 1976, improving yearly from a 23rd place finish in 1972 to 10th position in 1976. They also competed in the American International Open “Class A” division from 1973 to 1976, earning a finalist position of 7th place in 1974, 9th in 1975 and 8th in 1976.
In the fall of 1976, the corps merged with the Dutch Boy Cadets to form the Northstars.
