The Golden Lancers drum and bugle corps was founded by Ken H. Behrend in November of 1991 by the Explorer Post 155 of the Greater Pittsburgh Council of Boy Scouts of America.
The corps entered field of competition in 1992, competing in both Drum Corps East and Drum Corps Midwest (DCM) circuit contests and placed 5th in the Illinois State Fair “Division II” class and 17th in the DCI “Division II” preliminary round. The following year, reclassifying as “Division III” members for the balance of their existence, the Lancers officially joined the DCM circuit, where they finished in 6th position in the 1993 and 1994 preliminaries along with 9th and 10th place finishes in the 1993 US Open and DCI championships. They also participated in the 1994 North American Open prelims, placing 7th and 12th and DCI championships.
In 1995, the Golden Lancers earned a finalist position in the DCI championships, placing 3rd as well as a 4th place finish in the DCM contest. That same year, Ken Behrend was named DCI “Division III” director of the year. The following season was arguably their most successful, winning the 1996 DCM “Division III” title along with 2nd place finishes in both the US Coast Guard (USCG) and Canadian Open regionals. The unit went on to a 2nd place finish in the DCI “Division III” championships and earned a 25th position in the DCI “Division I” Quarterfinals. Returning to the 1997 USCG and Canadian Open finals, placing 3rd and 7th respectively, as well as a 3rd place finish the DCM finals, the Pittsburgh group closed out the year with an 8th place in the DCI “Division III” prelims.
Due to a lack of brass players, they disbanded in 1998.
