The Hawks drum and bugle corps was formed in the fall of 1957 by the Moose Lodge 550 of Richmond, under the leadership of Russ Bell, Bill Medina and Arnold Waddie.

In the corps' very first appearance, they wore blue jeans, white shirts and overseas hats, participating in several parade competitions before entering the field of competition in both the California Legion State and Northern California State championships from 1960 to 1965. During that span, the Hawks placed 2nd in 1961, 6th in 1962 and 4th in 1964 in State Legion competition & was crowned the Northern California State junior champions from 1960 to 1964. They were recognized as one of the “Fastest Growing Corps in the West” in the first 5 years.

The corps also competed nationally, sporting their emerald red jacket, trimmed in black and white with black serge pants, black bolero-type blouses & West Point shakos with plumes, performing in the 1962 and 1965 American Legion Nationals placing 7th in the finals and 9th in the preliminary round respectively. The Richmond unit also competed in the 1963 VFW Nationals, finishing in 4th position in the finals. The group also sponsored their annual “Pageant of the Red and the Black” in August.

In 1966, they merged with the Knights of Cathay from San Francisco to form the Princemen.
