The Delaware American Legion (AL) Post 19 drum and bugle corps was formed in September of 1927, under the direction of Dr. H.D. Elking.
After their inaugural season of local activity, the corps entered the field of competition in the 1929 state contest, placing 2nd and traveled to their first of many AL National conventions that year, returning to the 1930 state parade and the 1930 Nationals preliminaries. In 1931, the Delaware Post competed in the 1931 and 1932 state championships, placing 4th in “Class B” division in the latter.
From 1933 to 1939, the corps placed between 4th to 6th in the annual Legion state “Class A” division, hosting the 1935 contest and appeared in the AL Nationals’ parade in 1936, 1937, sporting their new uniforms of horizon blue double breasted blouses with gold trimming, similar to the naval officers, as well as 1939 and 1941. Upon return from World War II, the corps regrouped and would participate in the annual Nationals’ parade from 1946 to 1951, for the exception of 1950, and actually fielded competitively in 1951, remaining active over the last 2 years, limited primarily to military functions.
They disbanded in 1954.
