The Crusading Militiamen drum & bugle corps was formed in 1977 through a merger between the Elks Crusaders of Wilmington and the Militiamen of New Bedford.

The corps competed for one season, participating at the World Open “Class B” championships, placing 14th in the prelims. They were also members of 3 Massachusetts circuits including the “Class B” of the Eastern Massachusetts and Greater New England circuits, where they placed 3rd and 4th respectively and won the Catholic Youth Organization “Prep Class” title.

In 1978, they merged with Southern Cross of Melrose to form the Guardsmen of Middlesex.
