The Dekalb Sons of American Legion (SAL) Post 66 drum & bugle corps was organized in 1935, representing the next generation of members who took over from the senior corps.
Out of the gate, the corps competed in their first contest in August of that year and would continue entertaining in local, state and regional events including the 1940 Illinois state convention, sporting their new uniforms consisting of a blue broadcloth shirt, with dark blue shoulder straps and the SAL insignia on the left arm. Over the pocket on the left side appears the word “DeKalb”, placing 8th in the “Class B’ division. They were also donated their instruments by the Dekalb AL senior unit. The following season saw the SAL Post 66 improve to a 5th place finish in state competition and participated in the 1941 American Legion Nationals’ parade.
As time passed, World War II made veterans of the young men and Dekalb once again reorganized as a senior corps.
