Founded in September of 2009 by Chris Magonigal, Aaron Sandoval, Robert Flores and Dillon Ingle, Genesis set out to provide an opportunity for the youth of the Rio Grande Valley to participate on the "next level" of musical competition.

After the group's organizational stability was evaluated, DCI announced that Genesis was approved to compete in the 2010 competitive season. In its inaugural season, surprised many with itscrowd-pleasing Latin-jazz program when it premiered at home in Texas,  then toured to Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio en route to the DCI “Open Class” championships, where the 69 member corps placed 9th in the finals.

After its first year, Genesis' staff made the decision to have each season be a "rebirth of the corps," combining new genres of music and visual ideas with the traditional drum corps idiom. The 76 member 2011 Genesis took 6th place in “Open Class” and 30th in “World Class prelims”, and the corps won DCI's "Most Improved Open Class Corps" award. With 84 members in 2012, the corps again placed 6th in “Open Class” before moving on to finish 29th in “World Class” prelims.

In 2013, the corps grew to 113 members, and its "mOZaic" program, which featured music from several different "Oz" sources vaulted the corps to a 3rd place finish in the DCI “Open Class” championships and advanced to the “World Class” semifinals, placing 23rd, earning full DCI membership and won the "Most Improved World Class Corps" award. Chris Magonigal was named DCI's “Open Class” Director of the Year.

On January 17, 2014, Genesis announced that the corps was moving its operations from Edinburg to Austin, posting on its website, “With its centralized location, dedication to the arts, and its financial possibilities, Austin is the perfect city from which to operate our program”. That year saw the corps repeat both a 3rd & 23rd place finish in the DCI “Open Class” finals & “World Class” semifinals. Over the following 2 years, the group remained highly successful, placing 4th in both 2015 & 2016 in the DCI “Open Class” finals and 22nd & 23rd in the “World Class” semifinals. From their inception to 2016, Genesis also participated in the DCI Southwestern “Open Class” regionals, placing 2nd from 2010 to 2012 & won the title between 2013 to 2016.

At the annual DCI meeting on January 27th, 2017, Genesis was approved to compete as a “World Class” corps since 2017, excluding the 2020 & 2021 season, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing the unit to tour extensively against the elite drum corps in the activity. They went on to perform in the DCI East regionals, placing between 9th to 11th, the DCI Southeastern (13th to 21st) & the DCI Southwestern (19th to 21st), effectively concluding their season as a DCI championship semifinalist finishing 23rd in 2017, 24th in 2018, 20th in 2019, their highest ranking to date, 21st (2022-2023) & 22nd in 2024.
