The Garden Statesmen drum and bugle corps was formed in the fall of 1969 through a merger between the Avengers parade corps from Dover and the famous Carver Gay Blades of Newark, by then a parade corps as well.
Representatives of both corps met at a fall RCA meeting in 1969 with the intent to each field a competitive corps. Upon discussion, they concluded that a merger would be best for both organizations rather than struggling to survive. The new corps’ name was the result of a contest amongst the members and the Garden Statesmen made their first appearance at the infamous “Evening with the Corps” in New York in May of 1970.
In their inaugural year, the corps competed in the Red Carpet Association (RCA) finals, placing 9th but over the next 3 years, converted to a parade and exhibition group, winning the New jersey American Legion “Senior Parade” division from 1971 to 1973.
In the fall of 1973, the corps reorganized as a competitive unit and participated once again in the RCA circuit, finishing 12th in 1974 & 15th in 1975, remaining active for the last two seasons. The corps also hosted their annual “Senior Preview” contest from 1974 to 1977.
They disbanded in 1978.
