The Gauchos drum and bugle corps was formed in the fall of 1960 and was self- sponsored & affiliated with the American Legion Post 587 of Fulton.

After their initial season of parades and exhibitions, the unit, sporting their red black and white Spanish styled uniforms, entered the field of competition in 1962, making their first field debut on July 21st and participated in several other contests and activities that year. The corps expanded there competitive presence as members of the New York-Canadian circuit, where they placed 6th in 1963 and 3rd in 1964.

They also participated in the New York Legion state championships, finishing 7th in 1963 and 4th in 1964. After their final season of competition in 1965, the Gauchos remained active as a parade unit from 1966 to 1968. The corps also sponsored their annual “Upstate Review” contest.

In 1969, they reorganized as a Junior group under the same name.
