The Grenadiers drum and bugle corps was originally formed on January 14th, 1928, under the auspices of the Cedar Rapids Playground Commission with Jack Fromm as the corps director and sponsorship from the Optimists International.

In 1930, a parents organization was formed purchasing, new uniforms and equipment, under the direction of Stanley Vesely in 1933. They competed in several Festivals including the Musicland Festival, winning many titles in the 30’s and the National Lions Club championships 1928-1944. In 1935, the corps became the Cedar Rapids YMCA Boys, under the YMCA sponsorship, winning the International Lions Club championships 1937, 1941 & 1942 and made an appearance on television, at the Iowa State Fair in 1946, with support from the All-Iowa Fair. They were also featured in the Warner Brothers movie short feature, "A Day at the Fair," in 1947, as the Hanford American Legion (AL) Post 5 also sponsored the unit.

In 1950, they hosted their first annual Hawkeye Tournament of Drums as the Cedar Rapids Cadets. The 1952 season was  the beginning of a rebuilding period for the corps. The Cedar Rapids unit, sporting their red, black, and white, also competed regularly in the Spectacle of Music in South Milwaukee, winning the 1951 & 1959 contests along with the Iowa State AL championships in 1947, 1951 & 1958 to 1965 and 1968 & 1969. The group also participated in 5 AL National championships, including the preliminary rounds in 1958 (17th), 1965 (7th) & 1969 (12th) along with the finals in 1959 (11th) & 1968 (2nd).

They disbanded in 1970.
