The Denis Morris Majestics drum and bugle corps was organized in the fall of 1960 as the Dennis Morris drum corps, a curricular activity sponsored by the Denis Morris Catholic high school, under the leadership of Mr. Ciprietti and the supervision of Reverend Lloyd Bechamp.
The corps was originally composed of boys from grades 9 and 10 and performed in parades and exhibitions throughout the region over the first two years. In 1963, with the addition of girls, under their new name, the Denis Morris Majestics, the corps joined the Canadian Drum Corps Association. Sporting new uniforms consisting of red jackets with white trim for the corps and white jackets with red trim for the color guard, representing the school colors, the Majestics won the 1963 Canadian National “Junior Novice” title.
The following season saw the corps move up to the “Class B” division, culminating a very successful summer as the 1964 Canadian Nationals “Class B” champions. In their last year of competition, the Denis Morris unit placed 2nd in the 1965 Nationals’ “Class B” division that featured what was arguably the best color guard in Canada.
In September of 1965, the corps directors of the Majestics and Grantham Police Boys announced on the competition field that the two corps would merge together to form the Chessmen.
