The Allegheny Monarchs drum and bugle corps was formed in 1967 through a merger between the Sharpsburg Cadets and the Vern Acklin Cavaliers.
The corps was from the Allegheny region within the Pittsburgh area, classified in the state Legion as a “Class B” unit. They were sponsored by the Verona VFW, the Oakmont American Legion and the Universal Fire Company of Penn Hills. The directors were Paul Dachille, Don Kretzer and Tom Mahan.
In their inaugural season of competition, they were nicknamed the “Big M” and were attired in smart black and green uniforms, presenting a varied and unique atmosphere of showmanship. The following season was challenging for the corps even before the merger and the make-up of the drum corps was also extremely competitive.
The Monarchs competed in 1968 but there was a split internally and the Vern Acklin Cavaliers actually reactivated that same summer, participating in local parades. This led to the eventual disbanding of the Allegheny group at the end of that season.
