Concord, CA United States
Founded: 1968
The Blue Devils B drum and bugle corps was originally formed in 1968 as the junior drum & bell corps when Blue Devils moved up to the senior level. In 1973, the Blue Devils B (BDB) converted to a drum and bugle corps.
As a cadet corps, for years, the unit performed almost exclusively on the West Coast, entering the field of competition in 1974 and participated in the 1975 VFW Nationals preliminary round, held in Los Angeles, placing 12th. The following season saw the corps compete as members of the Northern CA circuit, first competing at the DCI “Class A” championships in 1977 & 1978, placing 19th and 14th respectively in the prelims.
The corps became members of the Pacific Drum Corps Association (PDCA) for the 1979 and 1980 seasons, joining the Drum Corps West (DCW) circuit over the next 10 years. In 1982, BDB was crowned the VFW National champions, once again held in Los Angeles. They continued to compete regionally and toured out East to the 1991 US Open “A/60” championships, finishing in 4th position and the DCI “Class A/60” division finals, again with a 4th place finish.
During the next 5 seasons, the corps remained out West with appearances at the 1992 Drums Along the Rockies, placing 2nd in “Division II” competition and continued their strong presence as members of the DCW circuit over this time. In 1997, BDB returned to the DCI “Division II” championship finals, finishing in 4th position. From 1998 to 2003, the corps once again competed locally in “Division II” action, winning the 1998 Drums Along the Rockies contest, finishing 3rd at the 1999 PDCA circuit championships and participated at the CA state Open championships, placing 4th in 2000, 3rd in 2001 and 2nd in 2003. In 2002, they competed in the DCI Pacific circuit.
In 2004, Blue Devils B returned to the DCI championships, finishing 7th in the “Division II” Grand Finale, staying out West for the 2005 season, they were crowned the CA state Open “Division II” champions. By then, the corps was no longer considered to be a "feeder" corps and was treated as a stand-alone second corps of the sponsoring BD Performing Arts. After being a “Division II/Open Class” finalist from 2006 to 2008, the Blue Devils B corps won the first of three consecutive “Open Class” championships in 2009. With new rules in effect in 2011, the corps also competed in “World Class” semifinalist, finishing in 19th place and earning membership in DCI.
In 2012, the corps finished in 2nd place in “Open Class” and advanced to “World Class” semifinals, finishing 21st. The following season, they once again finished as bridesmaid in “Open Class”, advancing to “World Class semifinals” with a 20th-place finish. In 2014, Blue Devils B won its 4th DCI “Open Class” championship. When advancing to “World Class”, the corps shocked many by vaulting into 15th place in the semifinals, a placement ahead of eight “World Class” corps. The corps finished 2nd in 2015 “Open Class” championship competition and 19th in the “World Class” semifinals. In 2016, the corps won its fifth “Open Class” title and once again finished in 15th position in the “World Class” semifinals with an identical score to their 15th place finish in 2014.
Over the next two years, the corps finished both in 2nd place in the "Open Class" and 19th place in the "World Class" semifinals, choosing to remain on the West Coast in 2019, winning the Southern CA Classic in their division. After the 2020 season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the corps was also inactive in 2021, returning to the field in 2022, placing 3rd at the DCI "Open Class" championships and 22nd in the "World Class" semifinals. In 2023, BDB opted to compete regionally, succeeding to once again capture the "Open Class" Southern CA Classic title.
