The Flint Guardsmen started in 1967 as a result of the split-up of the Flint Opti-Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps. Russ Jones and his brother Rudy were founders. They improved each year and placed 5th in Class A at the 1971 US Open Championship finals. The Guardsmen just missed the US Open finals in 1972, but they did win the Michigan AL State and GLDCA Championships that year. The Guardsmen folded after the 1972 season but re-emerged later.

In 1975 the Guardsmen were the GLDCA Class A Champions. The corps was active off and on up until the early 80's. At that time founder Russ Jones focused his efforts to the successful Studio One Winter Guard of Flint,MI.
