In early 1957, the St. Mary’s Annunciators parish, under the direction of Father John Crowley, had fired the managerial staff of the Annunciators and at that point the instruction staff resigned. A promising young corps was in serious trouble.
Dick Keough decided to keep the corps going as an independent corps. The administrative staff joined him, as did the vast majority of the members and the instructors to form the Cambridge Caballeros and became one of the finest units ever to come out of the Boston area. The corps was a perennial member of the Eastern Massachusetts (E-Mass) circuit, winning the 1957 “Class B” title and moved up to the “Class A” division in the 1958 E- Mass circuit preliminaries. They also participated at the VFW Nationals that same year, where they place 12th in the prelims.
In 1959, the corps was runner-up at the E- Mass championships, capturing the 1960 “Class A” title. Over the next two years, the Caballeros ranked 4th and 8th respectively in the 1961 and 1962 VFW Nationals while as well securing their E-Mass “Class A” title.
After 1962, the core group that had been there through it all aged out simultaneously and the corps disbanded in 1963.
